Fun Ways To Celebrate Earth Day At Home!
As an outdoor facility that relies on Mother Nature each season, Brimacombe recognizes the importance of protecting the environment. That’s why we want to talk to you about Earth Day!
Earth Day started 50 years ago, when people were concerned about the amount of oil spills happening in the oceans. to demonstrate support for environmental protection. Now, every year on April 22, millions of people participate around the world in various acts that help protect our Earth.
So, what can you do today to help the Earth be a better place? While we might not be able to participate in some of our regular Earth Day events, like community group garbage pick-ups, here are a few options we came up with that you can do around your home to help show some love to the Earth:
1. Plant a Tree, Bee-Friendly Flowers or Start a Garden!
Trees are essential in the fight for a cleaner, more sustainable environment as they provide oxygen, clean the air and help combat climate change. For extra fun, have a dedication ceremony and dedicate your tree to a special someone!
By planting flowers that bees like, you are encouraging pollination. Bee pollination is needed for over 80% of our food that we eat. A list of flowers that bees like include pansies, lavender, sunflowers and marigolds. You can also find wildflower seeds mixes of seeds at nurseries and home hardware stores that will plant a variety of bee-loving flowers in your garden.
Whether it’s a few small pots inside or a plot outside, growing some of your own vegetables or herbs is a great way to lessen your environmental impact, not to mention a great activity for the whole family!
2. Get Crafting!
Crafts are a great way to recycle items that may end up in our garbage or recycle bins. Don’t let them get thrown away – put them to good use! There are so many creative ideas out there, and these are a few of our favourites:
3. Explore the Great Outdoors
Most forms of electricity release gases into the air, which get trapped in the Earth’s atmosphere and turn into pollution. So, what can we do to help? Turn off the television and lights and get outside and stretch your legs! Go for a walk or even play some fun games in your own backyard! Check out this fun printable scavenger hunt and use the opportunity to point out various animals or plant life and explain how each plays a vital role within the ecosystem.
4. Chalk It Up!
Grab some sidewalk chalk, go outside and draw the Earth, some trees and animals, to remind everyone who walks by that it’s Earth Day!
5. Games Galore
Who needs television, iPads or cell phones? Put away the technology that uses electricity, and turn to good ole’ fashioned board games! Pull out Scrabble, Clue or even a big round of Settlers of Catan. If you want to be even more Earth-friendly, turn off the lights and play board games by candlelight!
Whatever you choose to do, keep the Earth in mind! It’s everyone’s home, and it’s our responsibility to protect it and treat it with care.
From all of us here at Brimacombe – Happy Earth Day!
