Celebrate Earth Day With These Fun Activities!
As an outdoor facility that relies on Mother Nature season after season, Brimacombe recognizes the importance of protecting the environment and its fragile ecosystems.
Earth Day presents the perfect opportunity to celebrate and appreciate nature with your family and discuss the many ways in which we can be more environmentally friendly, not just today, but in our day-to-day lives.
Looking for ways to celebrate Earth Day with the kids? Here are a few ideas to get you started!
1. Tackle Trash
Pick a local park, trail, et cetera and remove all those coffee cups, plastic bags and such that don’t belong! Don’t forget gloves. Everyone loves a challenge – so whoever collects the most litter wins! Not only are you beautifying your neighbourhood, you’re also reinforcing that no one benefits from littering. It’s a great way to show the kids that every little piece of litter adds up to a whole lot of trash!
2. Tree Time
Trees are essential in the fight for a cleaner, more sustainable environment so ensuring new trees are being planted has always been a pivotal aspect of Earth Day. Take part in a community tree-planting event, or even plant one in your own backyard. For extra fun, have a dedication ceremony and dedicate your tree to a special someone!
3. Get Gardening
Whether it’s a few small pots inside or a plot outside, growing some of your own vegetables or herbs is a great way to lessen your environmental impact, not to mention a great activity for the whole family!
4. Exploring The Great Outdoors
Warmer temperatures have finally hit, and it’s the perfect time to get outside and stretch your legs! Research a new trail in the area or visit a conservation area. Use the opportunity to point out various animals or plant life and explain how each plays a vital role within the ecosystem.
5. Games Galore
Turn off the TV screen, put the phones away and pull out those board games! For extra Earth Day points, turn off the lights and play by candlelight!
6. Reduce, Reuse & CRAFT!
Make a craft with recycled materials. There are so many creative ideas out there, and these are a few of our favourites:
- Milk Carton Garden Houses
- Recycled Paper Roll Daffodils
- Recycled T-Shirt Dog Toy
- Toilet Paper Roll Bird Feeder
- Egg Carton Turtles
Every effort made adds up to one big positive change when we all work together.
From all of us here at Brimacombe – Happy Earth Day!
