FROM MOTORS TO MOGULS: BRIMACOMBE SKI AREA OFFERS FREE SKIING THIS WEEKEND FOR GM EMPLOYEES TO HONOUR THEIR LEGACY IN OSHAWA

MEDIA RELEASE
For Immediate Release | Dec 19, 2019

ORONO, Ont. – In the 1950’s, General Motors Canada donated a couple motors to a nearby GTA ski area to use in their new tow lifts; over 60 years later, as the final vehicles roll off the General Motors (GM) assembly line in Oshawa this week, that ski area is returning the gesture. Brimacombe ski area, formerly known as Oshawa Ski Club, is honouring GM’s contributions and community legacy with free skiing for GM employees, both past and present, all weekend-long, from Saturday, December 21 through Sunday, December 22, 2019.

Both current and former GM employees are eligible for one complimentary lift ticket for themselves each day when they show valid proof of employment such as a GM Employee ID card or paystub with photo ID. While the complimentary offer is limited to the employee only and is non-transferable, friends and family, as well as community members, are welcome to purchase a lift ticket, with $1 from every lift ticket sold this weekend to be donated to the United Way Durham Region – a charity of choice of GM’s employees over the years.

“General Motors Canada and its employees have played such an important role in not only our community, but also in the 83-year-history of our ski area,” said Mark Rutherford, General Manager, Brimacombe. “From the company donating motors for some of our first lifts, to a local GM dealership’s past donations of space for our ski swap, to the countless employees and their families that have supported us and visited our slopes over the decades, we would not be who we are today without their support and this is the least we can do to honour that legacy.”

Brimacombe is open 9:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 21 and 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 22, weather and snow conditions permitting. Rental equipment and lessons are also available at an additional cost. Brimacombe is also accepting donations of gently used outerwear & non-perishable food items for its Annual Food & Coat Drive. For more information about Brimacombe, visit brimacombe.ca.
