Meet The Counsellors Of Camp Brimacombe

Nature-enthusiasts Calum and Tjerk are looking forward to being play-partners, teachers, and role models for their crew of campers at Camp Brimacombe this summer! Read on to discover their favourite activities, their thoughts on summer camp, and just what it is that draws them to work with kids!

Calum

Calum will be entering grade 11 in the fall and loves to live an active lifestyle.  Between skateboarding, snowboarding, soccer and hockey he counts himself lucky to never have broken any bones (knock on wood!). Skateboarding is his latest passion and he can often be found at the Bowmanville or Hampton skate parks tackling new tricks. After high school he would like to attend McGill University, for either Arts & Science or Engineering. He is no stranger to Brimacombe’s terrain after having spent many winters skiing and snowboarding on the slopes since he was 4 years old.

How do you think camp is beneficial to children?

I attended numerous camps growing up, both outdoors and sport-based. I’m thankful for those experiences because they taught me a wide range of skills, especially communication skills, and the ability to make friends easier!

What prior experience do you have working with children?

I really enjoyed being a snowboard instructor last winter because it meant I was working with kids. It was a challenging role at times, but very rewarding to help them learn a new skill!

What drives you to work with children?

It is a lot of fun working with children and overall I just always find it to be a very positive experience!

Favourite Food?

Sushi!

TJERK

Originally from the Netherlands, Tjerk (pronounced CHair,ik) has lived here in Orono since 2005 and is very familiar with the Brimacombe grounds. An avid skier, he has volunteered with our Peewee Ski Camp and has worked as a lift attendant for the past two seasons. In the fall, he will enter his second year at the University of Toronto, working towards a Bachelor of Commerce. His future plans may involve living in Holland while pursuing a master’s degree. A lover of all things outdoors, he particularly enjoys swimming and hiking (with his three dogs!).

How do you think camp is beneficial to children?

Camp gives them a fun and educational experience where they can create memories that will last a lifetime.

What drives you to work with children?

Children are fun to work around – they’re very passionate and observant about things we tend to forget about as we grow older. I love interacting with children and being able to make happy memories with them.

Favourite Food?

French fries!

Favourite childhood memory?

Skiing with a big group of friends at Brimacombe!
